Full Text

"Escobedo," the leader of the abortive attempt at revolution in Mexico, has possibly learned by this time that putting his head within reach of the lion's mouth on the southwest side of the Rio Grande is not the safe sort of thing that is shown off in traveling menageries. There was something very significant in the dispatch announcing his capture and departure for Monterey, "if he shall reach there alive." Occasionally they make short work of political offenders in Mexico, whether they be mere "precadocs" like Escobedo, or emperors on paper like the amiable but most unfortunate Maximilian. It is only when one contemplates the way they work such matters on the Mexican side of the line that he can fully appreciate the leniency on our own.
