CREW BUSY OPENING ROADS
PREPARING FOR BUSY SEASON
Work on the
tram road from
Nome to Solomon started several
days ago and today about 25 miles
of track have been cleared of
snow. Eight men are busy working
on the tram shoveling snow out of
the deep cuts and making the road
passable for traffic.
Two grader crews are in operation,
one of them now doing
work on the Sunset road. Considerable
work is being done at the
point where Anvil Creek crosses
the Sunset road. Every year a
glacier causes traffic to be held
up at this point, and a bad washout
has occurred there. The other
grader crew is busy on the Osborne
road, clearing snow and leveling
the road off for automobile
travel.
Another crew is being kept busy
with light repairs on other roads
around Nome, placing them in condition
for the summer travel to
the creeks.
A thawing outfit manned by three
men working in eight hour shifts
is busy down in Bourbon Creek
thawing out the tailings piles so
that when the gas shovels start
work, the completion of the
new airplane field will progress
at a rapid rate. About two thousand
feet yet remain to be constructed,
with additional surfacing
necessary on that part which
was finished last fall.
The grocery and clothing departments
of the Bon Marche have
been undergoing altering and painting
during the past two weeks, and
today the interior appears light,
and well furnished for taking care
of the various lines of products
which are planned for inclusion as
soon as the boats arrive.
