State Body Entertained by Kent Association
Events Scheduled for July 8th and 9th With Over $500 in Gold to Be Awarded as Prizes
Plans are fast being formulated for the eleventh annual convention of the Delaware State Volunteer Firemen's Association to be held in the Temple Building, Dover, Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 and 9, each session convening at 10 a. m. standard time.
The present State officers are: Elbert C. Bailey, Laurel, president; John N. Jordan, Five Points, vice-president; Sam H. Carson, Dover, secretary, and John G. Guyer, Richardson Park, treasurer. Delegates and alternates will represent each of the forty companies in the State at the convention and many visitors are expected. The Kent County Association will entertain the State body. The officers are: J. E. Haddaway, Wyoming, president; L. F. Sweitzer, Hartly, vice-president, Willard D. Boyce, Cheswold, secretary, and C. W. Machamer, Clayton, treasurer.
Arrangements for the event are being made by the Board of Directors, including Warren W. Pettyjohn, Dover, chairman; W. Henry Ennis, Clayton; Ralph C. Hayes, Harrington; William Schmidt, Wyoming; A. R. Jackson, Magnolia.
The first day's session will be devoted to routine business including reports, address and election of officers. The second day will be featured by a mammoth parade with many companies with members, ladies' auxiliaries, apparatus, band, bugle and drum corps, competing for the many cash prizes. The business establishments and residences will be decorated for the occasion.
Following is the program for Wednesday, July 8:
Convention called to order by President Elbert C. Bailey; Prayer by Rev. S. Baynham Hiley, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Dover; Address of Welcome by Mayor J. Wallace Woodford; Reply by Elbert C. Bailey, president; Report of Credential Committee; Roll call; Reading of minutes of 1930 Convention held in Georgetown; Report of Officers and Committees; Introduction of New Business; Address, Speaker to be engaged; Nomination of Officers for Ensuing Year; Luncheon; Convention Called to Order; Business session; Address, Speaker to be selected; Election of officers for ensuing year; adjournment; delegates and visitors entertained by Robbins Hose Company Carnival.
The program for Thursday, July 9, will open at 1:30 p. m., on Dover Green when a demonstration of First Aid Work will be presented by the Robbins Hose Company Team of Dover, under supervision of John W. Argo, Instructor, and William C. Boyer, Jr., Captain.
The prizes offered and to be awarded participants in the parade are:
First Prize—William H. Todd Trophy to Company making best appearance with apparatus and 25 or more uniformed men in line. This Trophy will be up for competition every year and must be won three years by a Company to retain. The Company winning same each year shall return it to Convention Committee one week prior to State Convention.
Second Prize—$20 in Gold by Dover Chamber of Commerce To Company making second best appearance with apparatus and 25 or more uniformed men in line.
Third Prize—$20 in Gold by Mayor J. W. Woodford—To Company having the most uniformed men in line with apparatus.
Fourth Prize—First Aid Kit by H. A. Schagrin—To Company having the most men in line with apparatus.
Fifth Prize—$20 in Gold by Dover Rotary Club To Company having the best equipped fire fighting apparatus in line with 25 or more men.
Sixth Prize—$10 in Gold—To Company having the second best equipped fire fighting apparatus with 10 or more men in line.
Seventh Prize—$100 in Gold To Company having the best band in line playing as they pass the Judges' stand.
Eighth Prize—$50 in Gold—To Company having the second best band in line playing as they pass the Judges' stand.
Ninth Prize—$50 in Gold by Robbins Hose Company—To best Drum and Bugle Corp in the State or outside the State.
Tenth Prize—$25 in Gold—To the best Ladies' Auxiliary in the line of parade.
Out of State Prizes
First Prize—$50 in Gold—To Company making the best appearance with 25 or more uniformed men in line with apparatus.
Second Prize—$20 in Gold by Robbins Hose Co.—To Company making second best appearance with 25 or more uniformed men and apparatus in line.
Third Prize—$100 in Gold—To Company having the best Band in line playing while passing Judges' stand.
Fourth Prize—$50 in Gold—To Company coming the greatest distance with apparatus and 25 or more uniformed men in line.
Fifth Prize—$25 in Gold—To Ladies' Auxiliary making the best appearance in line of parade.
Special Prizes—Contributed by Robbins Hose Company: $10 in Gold for best decorated business house on line of parade; $10 in Gold for best decorated residence on line of parade; $10 in Gold for the best decorated show window on the line of parade.
