MALTA FEVER CASE REPORTED IN STATE

Effort to Advance Hearing on Suit for Prohibition Referendum

SANTA FE, May 18—Communicable diseases in New Mexico last week totaled 156 cases, an increase of 37 cases over the week before. It is shown in the weekly bulletin issued by the state department of health.

Five of the seven counties that reported diphtheria the week before also reported cases last week. Torrance, that had an outbreak of 15 cases the week before, reported no new cases last week. There was a substantial increase in measles and a corresponding decrease in mumps. The first case of Malta fever that has been officially reported in the state is reported from Chaves county. This is a disease not often encountered in the United States but quite common along the shores of the Mediterranean. Contagion is spread principally by goats.

The diseases reported last week were as follows:

Chickenpox: Bernalillo 3, Grant 1, Luna 1, San Miguel 2, total 7.

Diphtheria: Colfax 2, Lincoln 4, Mora 1, San Miguel 1, Taos 1, Union 1, total 10.

German measles: Socorro 1.

Gonorrhea: Bernalillo 6, Chaves 1, Colfax 1, Dona Ana 4, Grant 1, Luna 1, Otero 1, San Juan 1, total 15.

Influenza: Dona Ana 2, Otero 2, total 4.

Malaria: Rio Arriba 3.

Malta fever: Chaves 1.

Measles: Bernalillo 2, Colfax 1, Dona Ana 16, Grant 1, Hidalgo 3, Roosevelt 1, total 47.

Meningitis: Bernalillo 1, Colfax 2.

Mumps: Bernalillo 4, Chaves 1, Dona Ana 3, Eddy 1, total 8.

Pneumonia: Bernalillo 1, Colfax 3, Dona Ana 2, Roosevelt 1, Taos 1, total 8.

Scarlet fever: Bernalillo 2, Chaves 1, Colfax 4, Dona Ana 4, Grant 2, McKinley 1, total 14.

Smallpox: Colfax 1.

Syphilis: Bernalillo 3, McKinley 2, total 5.

Tuberculosis: Bernalillo 1, Chaves 2, Colfax 1, Lincoln 1, Luna 6, Mora 1, Otero 1, Rio Arriba 1, Roosevelt 1, total 13.

Typhoid fever: Chaves 1, Dona Ana 2, total 3.

Whooping cough: Eddy 1, Luna 3, total 4.

Total of all diseases for the week, 156.
