ADA Supports Benton's Oust McCarthy Move

WASHINGTON -- Full and active support is asked of all Americans by the national board of Americans for Democratic Action for Sen. William Benton's (D-Conn.) resolution asking expulsion of Sen. Joe McCarthy (R-Wis.) from the Senate.

"Steadily and swiftly," the board statement said, "it is becoming apparent to most Americans that McCarthy's crusade is not aimed at Communism or its American adherents. It is designed to intimidate and silence men who question the world views and domestic opinions (subject to change without notice) of Senator McCarthy. It is designed, as Mr. Truman has pointed out, to suppress debate and disagreement and to create a national atmosphere of panic in which free exchange of ideas is drastically curtailed."

Senate Elections subcommittee has voted unanimously to investigate charges made by Sen. William Benton (D-Conn.) that Sen. Joe McCarthy (R-Wis.) is irresponsible and not fit to serve in the Senate. Chairman Guy Gillette (D-Iowa) said the subcommittee staff will investigate 10 detailed charges and report findings by Nov. 1.

The sordid tale of McCarthy was presented in its entirety in a recent issue of Wisconsin CIO News in a special section called "Smear, Inc." The section is a reprint of material originally published in the New York Post, and is used by special arrangement.

The paper noted that labor in Wisconsin doesn't want merely to find a man to beat McCarthy. It wants good representation instead of McCarthyism.

ADA praised Sen. Benton and President Truman for their stand against McCarthyism, and commended Senator Herbert Lehman (D-NY) for "exposing the efforts of the McCarran committee to make McCarthyism respectable."
