WASHINGTON, May 8.

The Navy Department has received dispatches from Com. Dupont from Port Royal to May 3d. On the 29th ult., the gunboat Hale went on an expedition to capture a rebel battery near the junction of the Dawho, Pawpaw and South Edisto rivers. The enemy opened fire upon the Hale when within 1,800 yards and continued it as she wound her way up to attack at close quarters. When the Hale reached the east bend of the river within a short distance of the battery the rebels fled in boats. A party landed and destroyed the work.

The Hale returned without a man injured.
