Insurance Against War
By RUTH TAYLOR.
If you could take out a policy that would
insure there being no war in your children's
and your grandchildren's time, wouldn't you
make every sacrifice to obtain such a policy?
But there is no insurance against war, you
say.
Isn't there? How can you make war with-
out people? And who will be the soldiers of
tomorrow?
We as a nation believe in education. We
know that through education we have ex-
tended the expected length of life. We have
wiped out many diseases that scourged the
world. We have resolved many of the disputes
that troubled the ancients.
But what have we done about peace? Twice
in our lifetime have wars devastated the
world. And those who fought in the last war
were but children when the bugles sounded
before. What made them warlike? What made
them eager to take up arms at the call of any
man who promised to change their lot.
It was because they were too starved in
body and mind to think clearly. Because the
essential material things were lacking. Be-
cause in the midst of a world of plenty they
lived without necessities. Because they saw
other peoples and other nations having what
they did not. Because they grew up to wanting
until having became all important.
Are we going to let that happen again?
What of the children of the world? Can there
be peace if a child grows up warped in mind
and body of hunger which we could assuage?
Is there a better insurance against war
than feeding the children of the world. than
inculcating in them the idea that people whom
they do not know, whom they have not seen,
care for their welfare? That they are not out-
casts, damned by the sins of their fathers?
That in time of trouble we are all one people—
regardless of race, regardless of nationality.
regardless of religion-just friends of little
children-eager to help. warm of heart, and
loving in spirit.
You, whose children are well-fed, who
live in sheltered homes-can you do more for
your own than to, in their name, respond to
the United Nations Appeal for Children? What
you give will be insurance for your children's
future.
"And he who gives a child a treat.
Makes joy bells ring in Heaven's street."
