MISSION, Mar. 28—Roy Reed, Mission rural mail carrier, is awaiting the final action of postal authorities on a patented mail box flag submitted for their consideration recently.
According to Reed, the flag when placed on boxes will "greatly facilitate the job of the carriers."
The gadget, devised within the past four months, has been patented with the aid of Perry Clark, McAllen, and patent papers have been received. Co-operation of the Texas State Mail Carriers association has been secured; and, Reed said, he has virtually gained the co-operation of the federal postal officials.
Constant annoyance at having to release the old style flag which, when raised, had to be lifted from a groove at the side of the box, is credited by Reed as creating the idea for his origination. His patented contrivance compels the flag to drop automatically as the door of the box is opened.
Several thousand rural mail carriers, serving approximately seven million boxes in the United States, should have some consideration, Reed declares, as he mentally considers the possibilities of his invention while serving his route and awaiting final word from postal authorities.
