Desperation.
In the face of the resolutions of the Know-nothing State Council, urging most strenuously a hearty coalition with 'all the elements of opposition to the Democracy,' some of the reckless and unscrupulous leaders of that faction have the hardihood to declare that the Know-nothing party is the only party opposed to abolitionism: and that they are going to unite with Seward and Greeley and Botts and his free negroes to put down that heresy. If anybody can believe that Seward and Greeley are not abolitionists and enemies of the constitution and the Union, then they can believe that Mr. Richard and the Know-nothing State Council of Maryland, who recommended a union with them, are not.
But if there be any truth in the long received adage, 'show me who you go with and I'll tell you what you are,' then are we right in charging that the leaders of the Know-nothing party are abolitionists in heart, or so destitute of principle as to be ready to unite with that sectional and unconstitutional party, for the purpose of defeating the Democracy, which stands like a wall of fire around the constitution and the Union. We say then emphatically that if the Know-nothing leaders be not abolitionists, they are their allies, and engaged with them in beating down the only bulwark in defence of the constitution and the rights it secures to Southern men—Republican.
