Full Text
A good deal has been said relative to certain applications made by Senator Douglas to the capitalists of Wall street for a loan of from fifty to one hundred thousand dollars to carry on the contest in Illinois. The last time the Senator was in New York he opened a negotiation in Wall street for a loan of over $100,000, the major part of which was to meet engagements in the shape of mortgages on landed property, and other speculations out West. As to Tammany Hall, or any of the politicians here, aiding him with five cents, it would be more than they have done for years. It is well known that the present managers of Tammany Hall are secretly in favor of Douglas, and willing to assist him in every possible way—money always excepted.—N. Y. Herald.
