BURNING OF THE LAKE ERIE STEAM-SHIP
GREAT WESTERN.—The splendid
steamboat Great Western, bound from Chicago
to Buffalo, with a valuable cargo of produce,
&c., took fire on the 1st inst., whilst lying alongside
of the wharf at Detroit, and such was the
rapidity of the flames that she was entirely consumed,
together with her cargo and a large
quantity of baggage and money belonging to the
passengers, who were ashore at the time.

The Great Western was a splendid boat of
800 tons burthen, and cost over $100,000. She
was commanded by Capt. Walker, who commanded
the ill-fated Washington; which was
burned last summer.
