Full Text

The Philadelphia Sun contains a letter from the Rev. Mr. McCalla, addressed to President Polk, contradicting the statement made by him, of having been assured by the President that the Catholic chaplains, Messrs. McElroy and Rey, had been appointed as spies, and not as chaplains. The letter of Mr. McCalla abounds in language and charges that would do honor to the vocabulary of the most unchristianized of sinners. Secretary Marcy comes in for a large share of his denunciation, and all the Catholics, from Bishop Hughes and President Mulledy, down to the veriest sinner in the church, are denounced. Mr. McCalla will not forgive the President for not appointing him a chaplain.
