SEVEN PERSONS ARE KILLED
Building at
Philadelphia Partially
Collapses.

Philadelphia, July 16.-In one of the busiest sections of the city and at a time when many pedestrians were passing, the five-story brick building at the northeast corner of Eleventh and Market streets, which was being reconstructed for the United Gas Improvement company, collapsed with a terrific roar, burying or pinning beneath the ruins thirty-two persons, seven of whom are dead, one missing, one fatally injured and twenty-four more or less seriously injured.

Those killed were workmen employed by Sax & Abbott, contractors. The two lower floors of the building had been torn up and the three floors were shored up by heavy timbers. Steel girders were bracing the shoring. It is supposed that by moving one of the girders, the entire structure was loosened.

The crash came without warning and narrow escapes were many. Before professional aid could be mustered, automobiles, teamsters' wagons and all sorts of nearby vehicles were filled with the dead or injured and hurried to hospitals.
