I hope the prudent steady conduct of many in your city and province will counterbalance the imprudent fury, zeal, and mad declamations, made by others, in abuse of the word Liberty; and that, through your moderation, a repeal of those disagreeable acts will be obtained. The Earl of Hillsborough having been at his estate, near this place, lately, told me he always looked on the revenue acts as anti-commercial, and would use all his powers to have them repealed; and, from the tenor of his conversation, it appeared the moderation of many in your province would facilitate that acceptable service.
Whilst unconstitutional or oppressive revenue acts continue, if they had an effect to excite a spirit of frugality and good economy, and thereby decline the use of luxurious importations, it would tend to strengthen the envied rising greatness of your extensive country; and by confining yourselves, in a great measure, to your own produce, and the income of your own estates, render, in time, a friendship, and intercourse of commerce, come on any terms, by the mother country. All fierce, angry, hostile spirits, only defeat their own views, and protract the reconciliation so ardently wished on both sides.

Event Details
Letter writer hopes moderation in American city and province counters extreme declarations on liberty, leading to repeal of disagreeable acts. Earl of Hillsborough views revenue acts as anti-commercial and pledges to seek repeal, facilitated by provincial moderation. Suggests oppressive acts could promote frugality, reducing luxury imports, bolstering colonial strength, and enabling future commerce with Britain on any terms. Warns hostile spirits delay wished-for reconciliation.
