The merchants of this place truly sensible of the great advantages accruing to the trade of the Sugar Islands in general, and to this in particular, from the conquest of Martinico, and its dependencies; in gratitude to General Monckton, who achieved this great work with so much courage and conduct, and afterwards protected and established the rights of trade with so much equity and judgment, are now subscribing for an elegant service of plate, as an humble testimony of the sense they retain of his merits; while they cannot enough regret the loss they sustain by his return to his government of New York.
