Full Text

The East. Mr. Wylie, of the Edinburgh Witness, who has himself traveled through Asia Minor, points out that country as a most attractive one for emigrants at the present time. Land is exceedingly cheap, much of it very fertile, and all kinds of agricultural produce bring enormous profits, on account of the war. Armenians, Greeks, and even Turks, are now diligently raising crops where no plow has been driven for centuries, and realizing fortunes, and why should not the redundant population of Britain and France share in the golden harvest by settling in those classic regions, which lie at the doors, instead of going round the globe to Australia or California. It seems also that the enormous expenditure on account of the war is making the fortune of all kinds of contractors and traders, and that Algeria has been nearly emptied of its French settlers, who have repaired in great numbers to the Crimea. All this can not fail to have some permanent effect on Turkey.
