Extract of a Letter from the Oneida Carrying Place, October 12. 1758.

"The grand Sachem of the Oneida Indians was with us at the taking of Frontenac. he was one of the most Christian Indians I ever saw in my Life, constantly at Prayers, talking of Heaven and a future State, and said if we go on Praying the Land would be ours, and he would help us all that he could. Friday last he took his Leave of us, and said if he heard of any Thing he would let us know it: at 1 o'Clock he with three others, bid us farewell, but before he got half-a Mile from our Encampment, he was shot dead, one taken and the other two got in: The Capt's. alarmed went out, and found the poor King scalp'd, and brought him into the Fort, but could not come up with the Enemy: The General order'd a Coffin to be made for him, and gave his Wife white Linnen to lay him out in; and on Saturday in the afternoon he was decently buried in the North West Bastion. 3 Cannon fired over him, and the Indians perform'd their ceremonies by drinking of Wine; the Oneidas are determined to have Satisfaction for so great a Loss: The same afternoon an Indian who belonged to Major Ingleson, and who was taken at Lake George 1747, came in, having made his Escape from the Party that kill'd the King, he says he was carried to Canada, and has liv'd with Indians ever since, that The Party consisted of 100, and only 5 Frenchmen; that they could have kill'd several white Men, and did not want to, but had got the Person they wanted."

The Grand Sachem, who had been with British forces at the taking of Frontenac and expressed Christian sentiments and support, left the encampment on Friday with three others. Half a mile away, he was shot dead by a party of 100 Indians and 5 Frenchmen targeting him specifically. Captains recovered his scalped body but not the enemy. The General ordered a coffin and provided linen for his wife; he was buried Saturday afternoon in the North West Bastion with cannon fire and Indian wine ceremonies. Same afternoon, an Indian captive of Major Ingleson since 1747 escaped from the attackers and reported details.
