With Shotgun
Bernard "Barney" Oettinger, civilian employee at the NOB rigging loft, went hunting ducks recently but ended up shooting much larger game.
While hunting along the American River near Kalsin Bay, Oettinger, armed with a 12 gauge shotgun, fired and dropped a duck which landed on the opposite side of the river from where he was standing.
Crossing the river to pick up his duck he placed another shell into the magazine to replace the one fired. Suddenly a Kodiak bear cub reared up in front of him. He fired and knocked the cub down, killing it.
As the cub fell a great noise issued from nearby and the mother bear charged the hunter.
Oettinger fired a shot directly into the bear's face, knocking her to the ground. She immediately got up and started away. Oettinger fired his last shot hitting the bear behind the head. The bear continued on its way.
Later some sailors from the base hunted down and killed the wounded bear. Shotgun pellets were imbedded in her face and back of her head.
Following the experience with the bears, Oettinger collected his duck and called off hunting for the rest of the day.
