JACKSON, Tenn. (ANP)
With the arrest of Oliver Reaves, 21, by FBI agents, violators of the Selective Service act from Marshall's Chapel Church of God numbered 10 members. Reaves pleaded guilty to failing to report for final examination and work of national importance and was bound over to the federal grand jury. His bond was set at $2,500.
The group of draft evaders are the followers of their 63 year-old pastor, John Lero Marshall, (for whom the church is named), moderator of the West Tennessee Negro division of the Church of God, according to P.L. Harden, attorney for the group. The minister, aside from building the church himself, also helped build the Marshall Chapel school the attorney revealed.
Marshall allegedly advised the youths that they should not report for any duty under selective service. He testified at the hearing that he taught his church to follow peace with everybody and to not "participate" in war.
The case is expected to come before the federal grand jury when it convenes here Monday for the January session of the eastern division of the western district of federal court.
