Dangerously Wounded While Attempting to Prevent the Death of Another,
Alliance, O. August 5-Diamond, a small mining town fourteen miles north of here on the line of the Cleveland, Youngstown & Pittsburgh railroad, was thrown into a state of intense excitement this morning by a double shooting case, one of the victims being the wife of a prominent citizen of the place and owner of large tracts of coal land. Dick Jones, a notorious character, had been drinking hard for some time and had often threatened to take his life when in this mood. This morning he went to the house of Charles Merwin, but found him away from home. After talking with Mrs. Merwin for some time, he again threatened to take his life. Mrs. Merwin tried to persuade him not to act so rashly, but to no avail. He started toward the barn, where he said he would put his threat in execution. Mrs. Merwin determined that he should not kill himself if she could prevent it and tried to seize the revolver which he held in his hand. In the fierce struggle which ensued Jones emptied five balls into her body. After the shooting he realized what he had done and immediately started for the woods near by, where he ended his life with the revolver he had used on his victim. Jones was a hard drinker, and when under the influence of liquor often became very despondent and was a terror to the community. Mrs. Merwin is still living, but very slight hopes are entertained of her recovery.
