Truck Hijacking Strikes High Level; Loss Is $25,000,000

CHICAGO.—Truck hijacking has reached an all-time peak with a $25,000,000 total loss from more than 5,000 vehicles in the past year, a New York alarm system company president reports.

Jack Seide said last year's truck cargo thefts were 20 per cent higher than the previous year. He said hijackers take anything from ice cream or Sinatra records to coffee or eggs. Textiles accounted for one-third of the thefts.

He attributed the crime increase to four factors: development of unique methods by thieves, a pick up in youth crimes, revival of old gangs and the moving into the fold of wartime black market operators.
