Insanity Causes Family Tragedy

VANCOUVER, Wash.

County farmers attributed the family tragedy near here to insanity.

Creek Hammer, a 49-year-old farmer, insane for several months, had sent his wife and children ahead to school.

A neighbor, searching for a lost hen, came upon what was left of his body in a field.

He had used a dynamite to end his own life. He murdered his family with an axe.

His wife was killed in the barn.

The bodies of his daughter Ruth, 11, and his son Alfred, 9, were found with their heads crushed.
