Full Text
The National Intelligencer, to account for the little Hollander's degrading the Government, by running down to Norfolk with the despatches for the Russian Plenipotentiary, instead of requiring him to repair to Washington, related what it had heard, that when Mr. Randolph last crossed the Potomac, he "swore an oath" never to do it again. This has called out the gentleman who was probably the communicant of the anecdote; he seems vastly uneasy about it, and puts another face upon it. His statement is, that Mr. Randolph when crossing Potomac Bridge, and whilst paying toll, observed, (as the anecdotist thinks, in allusion to his bad health) "that he should (or would) never cross that bridge again." This we presume is the true version, of a most grave and important affair. Whether he "swore the oath" or did not swear it, is we imagine, of the least possible consequence.
