Town Thanks Lejeune For Police Assistance

The Jacksonville Town Board of Commissioners Tuesday night unanimously passed a resolution expressing appreciation to Camp Lejeune authorities and the provost marshal's office for the cooperation in maintaining law and order here.

In addition the board set Mayor Clyde Sabiston's salary at $125 per month as mayor, to be in force until the new budget is adopted for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Sabiston had been drawing $200 a month as tax collector until he was elected mayor to succeed the late Charles Warn.

The resolution expressing appreciation to Camp Lejeune authorities follows:

"WHEREAS. the construction and use of Camp Lejeune as a Marine Base brought tremendous increase and complication of local police problem, beyond the power of the small forces of the Sheriff's office and Town Police to handle by themselves; and

"WHEREAS, by a fine spirit of cooperation and action shown by the Provost Marshall and the Marine Military Police, the problem has not only been handled but this community has established an outstanding record for maintaining law and order to the extent that it is the only large military center in the State which the Federal authorities have not found it necessary to police under the provisions of the May Act;

"NOW, Therefore, Be it resolved by the Board of Town Commissioners that the Commanding Officers of Camp Lejeune and the Provost Marshall and Military Police Force have merited a token of appreciation for the efficient and vigorous service rendered in support of law enforcement and vice suppression in this Town and all the surrounding environs of the Camp Area; and it is the purpose of this resolution to voice the unanimous appreciation of this Body for such fine cooperation in the past and as well to express the hope that it is an evidence of a fine spirit of mutual work and undertaking for good government between the Civil and Military authorities in this Town and County throughout the future."
