Providence, TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1812.
PEACE CANDIDATES.
The freemen of this State will bear in mind that on Tuesday, one fortnight from this day, they will have it in their power to bear testimony against conscription, taxation, increasing debt, paper money, commercial restrictions and ruinous war, by mustering at the polls, and voting for The Hon. RICHARD JACKSON, jun. The Hon. ELISHA R. POTTER, as their Representatives in the National Congress. These men have so acquitted themselves that they need not be praised by their friends, and cannot be impeached by their enemies. The time of election presses near, and will rouse the activity of every friend to his country's interests. The enemies of Peace have begun to act with concert and industry. Indolence has never been one of their vices. Let the vigour of virtue and sound patriotism be, at least, equal to that of depravity. Let no man put upon his neighbour what he can do himself. Remember the importance of the stake. Remember that the question of Peace or continued War, if taken during the next session of Congress, will be decided by a very small majority, and that our representation may make that majority.
But that question will not be taken by the friends of the present administration, if it can possibly be avoided. So long as their present majority continues, they will seek expedients to continue the war, and make it, as Mr. Adams almost prophesies, eternal. To avert which let every freeman rouse himself, shake off his love of ease, and secure the election of our tried Peace Candidates. Success as brilliant and as infallible as heretofore will attend our honest exertions.
