THE FATAL DRAUGHT.
Mr. A. H. Steinhousen, apparently about twenty-three years of age, and a druggist by occupation, committed suicide Friday night, at his lodgings in Algiers, by taking morphine. On investigation we learned that Mr. Steinhousen arrived in this city about ten days ago, on the steamer Rio Bravo, and took up his abode in Algiers. On his arrival here he had some money, amounting to about $80. This he soon lost by gambling. The loss preyed upon his mind to a very great extent, and giving up all hopes of getting employment, he concluded to end his earthly career by his own hands. Below we give a letter that the deceased had written to his bosom friend, Mr. A. Corday, before taking the fatal drug:
ALGIERS, Dec. 24, 1875.
Friend Arthur—When you receive this I am not among the living, but traveling the valley of the shadow of the dead. I wonder if I shall find Melden there, as our mutual friend hath it. But enough of this. Please sell whatever I own, if that should be enough to give me some sort of a funeral; if not, I suppose I shall go to Potter's Field. Well, any place is good enough for me. Please give enclosed note to Miss Kate—but please let no one see it. This is the last wish, with the exception of that of your welfare. Please think of me once in awhile, and take an example.
Yours, good bye for ever,
A. STEINHOUSEN
P. S.—Please give Miss Katie—that package addressed to her, in my valise. Never mind about the letter.
A. STEINHOUSEN.
