Fire Fighting Plane Catches Fire At Portland

PORTLAND (AP) - A plane which had been used to fight forest fires in Alaska landed at the Portland International Airport with one engine afire Saturday.

The pilot was uninjured.

John Fletcher, 42, San Leandro, Calif., leaped out of the plane, and Air Force firemen extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes.

The plane, a twin-engine F7F Tiger Cat, is owned by Glenn Collins Adventure Films, Anchorage.

Fletcher said he was circling to land for a customs check when the control tower warned him his plane was on fire. He landed with the other engine.
