Full Text

BERLIN, August 19. We have the disagreeable news that on the 11th instant the Russians bombarded Custrin (a city of Brandenburg on the Oder, and capital of the dutchy of that name) in so terrible a manner, that almost every church and public edifice in the place, and about 700 houses, were reduced to ashes; notwithstanding which, the garrison and townsmen remain firm in their resolution not to open the gates, and to run the hazard of being stormed, in hopes of holding out till the King's army comes up to their assistance.

August 22. The Russians continue the bombardment of the fortress of Custrin, but with less vigour than at first, and without any success. The three batteries of cannon which they have opened are too far from the place to make any breach; and the cannon of the besieged, carrying much farther than those of the enemies, have already twice dismounted them. One of the enemies parties advanced to Schwedt, but finding that town well provided, retired without attempting any thing.
