PORTERS BROTHERHOOD HEARS LIBERALS SPEAK

Union leaders from all parts of the nation led by A. Philip Randolph, President, Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, heard Adlai Stevenson, Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin, Thomas K. Finletter, former Secretary of Air, and Charles Abrams, Chairman, New York State Commission Against Discrimination hail the founding of Modern Community Developers, new nationwide agency to aid builders of unsegregated housing with funds and advice. The dinner honored Kivie Kaplan, Boston manufacturer and Jackie Robinson, baseball hero.

BIG OVATION
Stevenson was received with tremendous ovation as he praised the goals of Modern Community Developers and stressed the significance of extending our democratic patterns in this critical period of world history. He commented on the trends away from democracy in nations like France, where at that moment DeGaulle was preparing to assume control.
Members of the AFL-CIO Executive Council played leading roles at the dinner held Tuesday, May 27 at the Hotel Savoy Plaza in New York. A. Philip Randolph presided as chairman of the National Committee of Sponsors.

LIKED FOOD
Walter Reuther, UAW President, wired the dinner saying: "Like food and clothing, decent shelter is one of the basic requirements of modern life. Equal opportunity to obtain adequate housing at reasonable cost is a right that must be established for every American regardless of race, color, religion or nationality. The efforts of Modern Community Developers to implement this principle will have the wholehearted support of the UAW and of all right-thinking Americans."
