Full Text
Our esteemed contemporary, the Express, says that the Democratic party has no man to pit against Blaine. We admit it. The hero of the Mulligan letters is unrivaled. On that point, to employ a phrase familiar at the card table, we "ante and pass the buck."
We have no statesman in our party, who, in a jobbing transaction in favor of a Railway corporation, in which he was expected to prostitute his functions as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives for gain, "wrote that he would be no 'deadhead' in the partnership." We haven't got them, dear Express, and what is more, we don't want them. We shall win in the present campaign, because we are led by clean-handed statesmen like Cleveland and Thurman.
