Every Man for Himself
As Goodman Conducts
"Survival of the fittest" seems
to typify the spirit of Benny Good-
man's musical style. The King of
Swing's direction consists of noth-
ing more than a few waves of a
pencil, the tapping of his foot and
a nod or two of his head. When he
takes up his clarinet to enter into
a "jam session" with Teddy Wil-
son, pianist and Lionel Hampton,
vibraphonist, the rest of the boys
are left pretty much to their own
devices.
