Full Text
The very much talked of (promising) retreat for British convicts, and their task masters Botany Bay; is like to prove a burying place, funeral pile, or new monument of British folly. The surgeon general, of that place informs, by letter, that all the provisions raised there in two years would not sustain the lives of the settlers for three months; that there were not enough on those barren shores for more than three months from April last, the date of his letter, at half allowance, but that they had proportioned the pittances in such a manner as to have some hopes dragging but a 7 months miserable existence -- after which, if no relief was received, they must all perish. These are the new British colonies! hopeful substitute of the United States of America, and, possibly, but the beginning of those curses, which, as heaven is just, inevitably annexed to national injustice, and political barbarism.
