From the Boston Repertory.

One word concerning a NOTORIOUS public Delinquent.

The satisfaction naturally manifested by many persons at the exposure of Bidwell's roguery, appears to give great offence to some misguided Democrats they are ready to reproach those who rejoice in the detection of a criminal, as if they rejoiced in the perpetration of the crime.

-This false judgment is one of a million proofs of the lamentable perversion of moral truth and sensibility already produced by party passions.

Yet who is there with a spark of honesty in his bosom, that does not spontaneously exult at the discovery of the perpetrator, when acts of deliberate knavery are committed? indeed it may be affirmed that a people so corrupt as to feel no indignation at flagrant villainy, are fit only for servitude, and cannot long escape it. If therefore a party exists here, and especially a party professing great popular power, whose feelings, interests, and political principles, impel them to disregard all moral distinctions, it is a duty to counteract them by all honest means ; that we may, if possible, prevent the contagion from spreading.
Public virtue, the total abandonment of the public mind, and as a necessary consequence, the utter loss of our liberty.

CENSOR.

The seat of Attorney General has now become vacant, by the absconding of the incumbent. Who will be appointed?

Whatever may be the purity of Governor Gerry's views, we much doubt whether he has firmness enough to resist the combination of the sturdy Jacobins in the Commonwealth, who, distrustful of devotion to their plans, have formed societies throughout the state, to intimidate him and destroy his free agency as Executive. High in the ranks of these conspirators stands Mr. Lincoln, late Lieutenant Governor, and now a senior member of the Council. He has lately republished in his paper, the Worcester Spy, his report made to Governor Sullivan, in which the whole federal party, without regard to character, talents or patriotic services, were denounced as men to be systematically excluded from all office, derived from Executive appointment. This he very plainly, and in a style arrogant and dictatorial as is his custom, tells Governor Gerry must be his rule of conduct.

It was this principle that turned the late worthy, beloved and faithful Jackson from the Treasurer's office, and put one of the idols of democracy, the robber Skinner in his place. It was this principle that overlooked the pretensions of every other man in the Commonwealth, and made Barnabas Bidwell Attorney General. This principle, if the Governor's dictators can prevail, will again look for violence, apostasy, and unprincipled zeal in party politics, as exclusive qualifications for the successor of the culprit Bidwell.

Is not the Hon. Samuel Dana the conspicuous man—the rival of Bidwell in political duplicity, apostasy, party zeal and party consequence? As in the cases of the other gentlemen above mentioned, he too has been 'persecuted' by surmises and invidious insinuations, which give an earnest of characteristic conduct in office.

We look forward with solicitude; for warnings, however often repeated, will not save us yet from the further discipline of experience.—Repository.

Wilkinson is now a candidate for the candor and forbearance of the public. We hope he will receive better treatment than he awarded to his fellow citizens to whom he refused the freeman's privilege, the right of habeas corpus, and whom he transported from New-Orleans to Baltimore, as criminals, and afterwards substantiated no charge against.
