Sunday evening Bill Scroggs, a worthless fellow living near Oak Hills, in this county, shot and instantly killed Mr. J. Olyphant, an old and prominent citizen. Three years ago Scroggs eloped with and married a daughter of Olyphant, and abused her shamefully. She left him some time ago, returning to her father's house, where she has since lived. Sunday evening Scroggs went to Olyphant's house and asked to see his wife. Olyphant refused to admit him-Scroggs drew a pistol and shot Olyphant. Scroggs at once started to Oak Hills, but was soon overtaken by a party of four men, who attempted to arrest him. Scroggs refused to submit to arrest, and fired on the party, a ball striking John Groff, a respectable farmer, in the left breast, killing him instantly. Scroggs then went to the residence of Mr. Waddell, Justice of the Peace, and surrendered himself. This morning a mob of men went to Waddell's house, where Scroggs was confined, took him out among the hills, and hanged him.
