—The Democratic party exists only in the South. It is no longer a National party. Why should we not accept the true state of things and act upon them? As a party, it is a Southern party, and nothing else. Why should it not turn its back upon the North, and act for the South?—Charleston Mercury.

The gentleman who entertains this opinion has just been appointed to the lucrative office of Superintendent of Public Printing at Washington, from which the inference may be drawn that Buchanan is also of the opinion that it is time the Democratic party "turned its back upon the North and acted only for the South." It has been doing this for some two years, but has never before admitted the fact.
