Dartmouth College
IN NEW-HAMPSHIRE.

From the Connecticut Courant, of Sept. 10, 1770.

LEBANON. August 23, 1770.

I HAVE now the satisfaction to inform all
who desire the increase of useful knowledge
among their fellow-men, and especially such
as have by their generous subscriptions in favour of my Indian charity-school, shewn their
pious zeal to promote religion and learning among the savages of our wilderness. that said
school is now become a body corporate and
politic, under the name of Dartmouth-College,
by a most generous and royal charter, granted
and amply endowed with immunities, powers
and privileges (in the opinion of good judges,
not inferior to any university on the continent)
by his Excellency John Wentworth, Esq;
Governor of New-Hampshire, whom GOD
has raised up & commissioned for this purpose.
And in order to determine the particular
town in said province I have, with one of the
trustees of said College, and another gentleman of known ability in such affairs, whom
we desired to accompany and assist us therein,
spent several weeks in viewing the several
places proposed, in order to enable the trustees
understandingly to fix, not only upon the particular town, but on the particular part or spot
in the town, on which it might be most convenient to erect the buildings for said College;
in consequence of which have, with the greatest unanimity, given the preference to the
south western corner of Hanover adjoining
upon Lebanon, on a choice tract of land, conveniently situate, containing more than 3300
acres, the whole of which is freely given for
the use of the College, by the Hon. Benning
Wentworth, Esq; late governor of said province,
and by the said towns of Hanover & Lebanon.
Where I hope soon to be able to support by
charity a large number not only of Indian
youths in Moor's charity school which is connected and incorporated with the College, but
also of English youths in the College, in order to their being fitted for Missions among
the Indians, &c.
And I would take this opportunity to advise
those who have so generously subscribed for
the use and support of this institution, that the
several sums by them subscribed, are in consequence of this incorporation of said school;
become payable; and that their said charities never were, & perhaps never will be more
needed, than at this present juncture; nor can
they likely ever be applied more agreeable to
the pious designs of the donors, or more for the
benefit and furtherance of the same, than now
by improving them to prepare those lands for
cultivation, which are given for the only use
and benefit of said institution.
And as the subscribers are scattered through
this and the neighbouring governments, and
many have not had an opportunity for several
years to pay the interest thereon, I propose that
such as shall not have an opportunity to settle
the accounts with me, or my book keeper before, may have opportunity to do it at Mr.
Bear's of New-Haven, on the day of the ensuing Commencement, or the day after either
with me. or one impowered by me for that
purpose. And it gives me no small satisfaction that the prospects, which through the
divine goodness are at present exhibited, give
thee and other generous benefactors, reason
to hope that they will have no occasion for
painful reflections that these charities have
been bestowed in vain; or any occasion of regret that they have not been applied to so
good a purpose as they might have been, by

Their sincere friend and servant in the Lord.
