Of the Prospect of Peace.

RATISBON, (Germany) JULY 20.

Negotiations for a separate Peace between France and the Elector of Bavaria, still continue.

FRANKFORT, (Germany) JULY 20.

With respect to peace, we know that one man at Vienna can turn the scale as he pleases, and that man is decidedly attached to the Court of London. The Queen of Naples is momentarily expected at Vienna. She has much influence over her daughter, the Empress of Germany; and the Empress has great influence at Court; and this power will be opposed to a peace. A peace, though anxiously wished by the people, cannot be sanguinely expected of a sudden by the well-informed. Great difficulties will occur in the Negotiation, if it is opened; and if England is to be a party the difficulties will be vastly magnified. The best course will be to simplify the business by as many distinct Negotiations as possible. Let Austria have a treaty—Bavaria a treaty—Wirtemberg a treaty; and England a treaty by herself, if she pleases.

[These are the speculations of an individual.]

Event Details

Negotiations for a separate peace between France and the Elector of Bavaria continue in Ratisbon. In Frankfort, speculations note that a key figure at Vienna, attached to the Court of London, holds sway; the Queen of Naples is expected at Vienna and will influence her daughter, the Empress of Germany, against peace. Peace is wished for but not expected soon due to difficulties, especially if England participates; separate treaties for each power are proposed.
