THE NEW-YORK CONTROVERSY.

This goes on with increased violence and heat. as far as the Churchman is concerned. The last number of this periodical is almost entirely filled with the subject. The six approving examiners of Mr. Carey, seem at length to have come to the conclusion that it is requisite to summon from the "vasty deep," some other spirits than that of "expressive silence," to meet the stringent and stubborn facts contained in "the statement" of Drs. Anthon and Smith. All that has yet appeared in reply, and we include the Rev. Mr. Price's letter in the last Churchman, as well as the laboured metaphysical argumentation of Dr. Seabury himself, do not, in our view, change the complexion of the matter one iota. There are the facts, and they are not to be overthrown or explained away. While falsehood is repeatedly and directly charged by the writers in the Churchman. on Drs. Smith and Anthon, no one presumes to lay his finger on the falsehood and say there is it. Indeed one of the worst features connected with this controversy is the spirit of coarse invective and abuse with which it is conducted. We know of no two clergymen in the Church whose characters have stood higher, or freer from censure, than those of Drs. Anthon and Smith. Because under a high sense of duty, they have endeavoured to prevent the admission of one holding Romanistic views, into the Church, they are now assailed in the columns of the Churchman, as though they were "a brace" of out laws. They are compared by the correspondent of the Churchman to Satan. He applies to them, the passage in Job, Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also. This writer in a sneering manner, tells his readers that this passage reminds him of the "recent ordination," at St. Stephen's, and that the sacred narrative does not inform us whether Satan at that time appeared as "an angel of light," or "assumed the garb of a 'Doctor in Divinity.' But there he was 'the original protestor,' ready to find fault with 'a perfect and upright man.' A cause that has to be defended by such weapons, and by a resort to such attacks upon personal character must be a bad one. Indeed it seems to be the deliberate and settled purpose of the Tractarian party to crush and destroy the character and influence of Drs. Anthon and Smith, by rolling upon them an avalanche of opprobium and abuse. The great comfort is that. the Lord reigneth,—Episcopal Recorder
