Takes Civil Service Post
NEW YORK (ANP)--- With three years to go before reaching the statutory age limit for judges, Judge James S. Watson, 67, last week accepted a job with the Civil Service commission, filling the term of another Negro Darwin Telesford.
To Judge Watson, this means a salary reduction of $3,500 a year, unless he is elected president of the commission, when he will pick up an additional $1,000. Judge Watson first elected to the municipal bench in 1930 ends his second 10-year term on Dec. 31.
He had not expected to try for re-election, it is reported on account of the age limitation. Naming him to the Civil Service commission, where his term will expire in 1954, assures him of an adequate pension on his retirement from civil life. However, the question is now asked, who will Tammany or Mayor O'Dwyer accept as a successor to run in the coming elections for the seat vacated by Judge Watson? Watson is the third Negro to be named to the Civil Service commission, the first being the late Ferdinand Q. Morton, who retired after many years on the commission.
