MISSOULA, Mont., (A) - The nation's Indians called on the federal government Friday to live up to its obligations as provided in treaties and other laws.
The statement was made in one of the 48 resolutions passed by the 300 delegates to the National Congress of American Indians at their annual convention.
Many of the resolutions dealt with the poverty and the low standards of health and education suffered by the majority of the Indians.
One resolution urged the federal government to make or underwrite home construction loans to Indians.
The delegates also re-elected Joseph R. Garry, Nez Perce Indian from Plummer, Idaho, president of the congress. Garry is a member of Idaho's Legislature.
