Acting upon the strike of five hay bailing crews, Neil Fifield, Brawley farmer and chairman of the alfalfa harvesting committee, was reported as attempting to obtain WFA approval of a rehearing or wage adjustment to meet the balers demands for a five-cent per ton increase.
The crews walked out Thursday night asking that growers pay the five cent increase at once instead of July 1 as provided for in the WFA wage stabilization order.
A meeting of growers and laborers was held Friday afternoon at Brawley. The growers pointed out that under the wage stabilization order and the specific wage ceilings placed on alfalfa harvesting they cannot increase, nor can the employee accept an increase, above that order, without becoming subject to severe penalties.
It was reported that several crews did not report for work Saturday morning pending information from the War Food Administration, and Earl Markling, Imperial Valley administrator for the advisory committee.
