Full Text

The New York Sun is showing up Geo. Neal Dow's well, well say, inconsistencies. Up to quite a recent date the General was a warm defender of the Maine law; and wrote that "the law is as well executed as any other on our statutes." Now, he declares in a recent open letter, "that the volume of the liquor traffic has not been reduced within the last twenty years," and that "the law has been and is absolutely ignored, and the authorities refuse to take any measures whatever for the extinction of the low grog shops which infest them, and inflict great suffering upon large numbers of people."

The reason for this "untrustworthiness" in the venerable Father of Prohibition, is his personal dislike to brother Blaine.

The New York Sun highlights inconsistencies in Neal Dow's support for the Maine prohibition law; previously he praised its execution, but now in an open letter he states the liquor traffic has not decreased in twenty years, the law is ignored, and authorities fail to address grog shops causing suffering. This change is attributed to his dislike for Blaine.
