London, Jan. 3—A despatch from St. Petersburg to the Daily News says: "The following are the details of the engagement between the Russians and Tekke Turcomans, near Geok Tepe, on the 24th of December: General Skobeleff, desiring to make a reconnoissance of Geok Tepe and effect a diversion from the repeated attacks on the lines of communication, advanced from Samurak with four companies of infantry and 200 Cossacks, with four fieldpieces and two mitrailleuses. The Tekkes came out in grand numbers to oppose General Skobeleff's column, which they encountered six versts from Geok Tepe, and fought so persistently that reinforcements were summoned from Samurak. The engagement lasted four hours, the Russians retiring on Samurak. The Turcoman loss was considerable. The Russian loss is, as usual, reported to be slight." A despatch from St. Petersburg to the Daily Telegraph says: "General Kouropatkin, it is reported on the best authority, has joined General Skobeleff, but with such small force as practically amounts only to an escort. The Tekke Turcomans have effected a junction with the Akhal-Tekkes."
