HINES PRAISES SCENERY; SHORT VISIT IS MADE

Major General, Head of Ninth Corps Area on Brief Alaska Trip

"The entire trip from Seattle, Skagway is one of beauty with wonderful scenery all of the way, and the fort at Haines has the most perfect setting I have seen anyplace," declared Major General J. L. Hines, commander of the Ninth Army Corps Area, who with Mrs. Hines, and his aide, Capt. Charles Kilburn, was in Juneau yesterday while the Admiral Rogers was in port.

The party is on the way to the Presidio at San Francisco, the headquarters of the Ninth Corps area, from Chilkoot Barracks where Major General Hines has been conducting a brief inspection of the fort and personnel.

"I held a tactical inspection and gave the troops a problem to work out, as is usual, and think, considering that they are snowed in so much of the year, at Haines that the troops are in excellent condition and training," Major General Hines said.

"I regret very much that we were unable to spend longer time in Alaska this year, due to engagements which make it imperative for me to be back in the States as soon as possible. As it is, this trip will take nearly a month, while I can inspect all of the other posts in the Ninth Corps area in a total of two months. However I hope to be able to stay longer if I come north next year.

"I enjoy making these trips as they give me an opportunity to become acquainted with my men. At Haines, for instance, there were only two officers whom I had met before, and it was a great pleasure to see these men again and to meet the others on duty there," declared Major General Hines.
