Marion Anderson Among Nation's Ten Most Admired Women
Princeton, N. J. - For the second time in three years, contralto Marian Anderson, the great American concert singer, has been named one of the 10 most admired women in the world.
She was named among a group of distinguished women, including three American First Ladies, past, present and future, in a poll conducted by the Gallup Poll, and announced last week.
"What woman that you have heard or read about, living today in any part of the world, do you admire the most?" reporters for the poll asked a cross-section of the American public. The 10 winners were then determined, with Miss Anderson placing 10th.
Here are the top 10 choices, ranked in the order in which they were selected:
1. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt;
2. Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower; 3. Queen Elizabeth II; 4. Miss Helen Keller; 5. Mrs. Clare Boothe Luce; 6. Mrs. Patricia Nixon; 7. Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy; 8. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith; 9. Mme. Chiang Kai-shek; and 10. Miss Marian Anderson.
The 10 represented choices for 1960, but all except Mrs. Kennedy and Miss Anderson were also winners in 1959.
