The late accounts received from England at New-York, of a change of Ministry and measures, as they are delivered in Rivington's Royal Gazette of May 8th, wear an alarming air, and ought to excite the extremest vigilance and attention in the United States. Not a word in all those accounts of considering the Independence of America as an indispensable basis of peace. On the contrary, we are still styled Rebels by Rivington in this very paper, even after the arrival of Sir Guy Carleton in New York. These States are menaced if we do not accept the new proposals, which for aught that appears, may be of the same nature with those that have been already made to ensnare us: Our great and generous Ally is still misrepresented and insulted in these new accounts of Rivington: and ridiculous stories told of the opposition of sentiment between Dr. Franklin and the Court of France. In short, if this mighty change in England, does not aim to divide us from our allies, and betray us into a separate peace, which must be our destruction, Rivington has grossly misrepresented it, and given it as an air of much resembling such a design, as deserves the severest correction of his employers. Every American rejects with disdain and abhorrence any thing tending to such a proposal; and to know whether Rivington has done injustice to these new men and measures, let us wait till we hear the decisions of Congress.
