WASHINGTON-(ANP)- In its meeting last week, the executive committee of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights pledged its support to the package of civil rights bills introduced to Congress by Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey and others.
The Leadership Conference, comprising 52 national organizations pointed out these are the same bills introduced in previous Congresses which they have always supported.
"The task is not the introduction of legislation," agreed the board, "but the getting of it to the floor of the Senate for debate and passage."
The group recalled that Senate Rule 22 which permits unlimited debate, still stands as the principal roadblock of the passage of any civil rights legislation.
The goal set up for Congress by the Leadership group does not stop with merely holding hearings and issuing favorable reports by committees of the House and Senate, and actual passage of needed civil rights legislation.
