TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 1941
IRISH STAGE BIG PARADE IN N. Y.
75,000 March Up Fifth Av. Again in Honor of Their Saint Patrick
NEW YORK, March 17.-(P)-A 70-year-old man fell off a horse today on Fifth avenue, but no bones were broken.
The luck of the Irish still held as he and 75,000 others marched up the great street to honor Saint Patrick once again.
It was like that all day. At 7 a. m., it was snowing hard: at 1 p. m., as the van of the long march swung out from 44th street, the snow was gone and the sun was bright, though the wind was bitter. Up ahead John J. Splain, grand marshal, walked grandly under a tall silk hat. Behind him—for miles and miles—walked the sons and daughters and grandchildren of Ireland.
Shades of the snakes that the patron saint never drove from Erin! There was the Tipperary men's N. & B. association and the Monaghan society with its ladies' auxiliary and the County Waterford Men; the Cavan Men, the Donegals, those from County Longford, County Down; the Wexford Men, County Mayo Boys, the Derrymen, Clan-na-Gael, Cumann na Mban—and ah yes, the Irish-American Association of the Department of Sanitation of the City of New York.
That's not the half of it. One out of every six cops in New York was on hand, some to march others to pin back the cheering shamrock-wearing well-wishers. Four hours were required for the marchers to pass Archbishop Francis J. Spellman and other church dignitaries in front of St. Patrick's cathedral and city officials at 64th street.
