Among the numerous evidences of attachment to Mr Clay, and of approbation of his public conduct, exhibited during his recent brief visit to the West, we notice in the Missouri Republican the following invitation from the citizens of St. Louis, which we understand was signed by nearly three hundred of the most respectable inhabitants of that place:
St. Louis, July 10th, 1827.
Hon. Henry Clay, &c. &c.
Sir: The profound respect which the undersigned citizens of St. Louis entertain for your talents, and the estimate which they place upon your eminent public services, would not permit them to behold otherwise than with deep concern, the success of any attempt to paralyze your usefulness. They deem the present, therefore, a conjuncture which calls upon them to render to you that support which the audible expression of their approbation may be calculated to afford--a conjuncture which imposes upon the good, upon the friends of correct principles throughout these States, an obligation to lift up their voices in support of an Administration eminently entitled to their confidence. Hoping that considerations referable to your public duties, may not be deemed to interpose obstacles to the gratification of their wishes, the undersigned beg leave to express the satisfaction which a visit from you to their infant city would afford them, if not inconsistent with your private arrangements, and to request that they may be favored with an opportunity to offer personally to you, the defender of the rights of Missouri, the advocate of free governments, the friend of the liberties of the human race, in every portion of the world--to you, the statesman of elevated views, of enlightened policy and liberal principles, those public manifestations of regard which would be most grateful to their feelings.
