Gen. Cushing.-The temper of Massachusetts federalism does not appear to have improved in the least during the past week, since the democrats have nominated this gentleman as their candidate for governor.— The federalists there have taken to circulating all manner of libels against his good name and high reputation. The Lowell Courier says that he procured volunteers by the aid of gin! All this wretched abuse only goes to show that they fear his nomination will be confirmed by the People in November. We trust that it may be.
The Worcester Palladium says:
" When the whig majority in the legislature, by an overwhelming vote, had declared that they would not appropriate a dollar from the public treasury, to buy clothing for the soldiers of the Massachusetts regiment, about to peril their lives for their country, in places where such aid was essential to their preservation, it was then that Gen. Cushing took six thousand dollars from his own pocket, and spent it for the soldiers; relying upon the government to refund the amount. It was the manifestation of this high moral courage and elevated patriotism that drew public attention to Gen. Cushing, and made him the centre of attraction of that popular sentiment which developed itself as by a common and spontaneous impulse when the convention assembled. The old issues between parties seemed to have been so adjusted as to be laid aside for a season; and the new issue of support or opposition to the government in a time of war presented itself with the freshness and force of an overruling supremacy. Gen. Cushing was chosen as the embodiment of the popular sentiment in the issue between democracy and whigism; and the members of the convention, especially the younger division of the body, rallied around him as their fathers rallied, in the fierce and embittered political conflicts of the war of 1812, around SAMUEL DEXTER, (notwithstanding he had once been conspicuous in the old federal party,) because he had the courage and patriotism to go before the people and denounce the opponents of the war as traitors to their country.
There are hundreds of high-minded whigs in Massachusetts, who, when the Massachusetts Legislature meanly refused to furnish the volunteers, with a temporary supply of clothing, nobly stepped forward and, with Gen. Cushing, contributed liberally for that purpose from their private purses. These men we are assured, will vote for Gen. C. at the next election."
